David’s FULL REVIEW

9.5/10

RT SYNOPSIS: From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them -- a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) -- and with the school's head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da'Vine Joy Randolph).

RATED: R | Some Drug Use, Language, Brief Sexual Material

WOKE AGENDAS: Brief moments where main character, Paul Giamatti, strongly states there is no God. Giamatti is a devout athiest in real life, so this line was most likely purposeful. Some religious profanity (“Jesus” used)

NUDITY/SEXUAL CONTENT: Bare breasts briefly shown in a photo. Some sexual language and innuendos.

DAVID’S AGE RESTRICTION: 16+

DAVID’S REVIEW: The Holdovers was easily one of my favorite holiday movies of all time. An instant classic. This is the kind of movie you’ll put on in the background at home during Christmas season.

Pros: Casting and acting were superb. Pace of the movie was just right. I felt emotionally connected throughout. Paul Giamatti was tremendous and will most likely win an award for his performance.

Cons: Didn’t have that heavy, emotional, gut punch finale I was looking for.
