Oregon Social Studies Class Changes Definition of ‘Freedom of Speech’

COOS BAY, OR — An Oregon mom is sounding the alarm after discovering a slightly different definition of ‘freedom of speech’ in her 2nd grader’s homework.

The social studies class homework reads:

“The Constitution includes the Bill of Rights. It lists 10 rights that protect our freedoms and that are shared by all citizens. These include being free to say and write what we want as long as it does not hurt anyone.” (See image below)

The school, Evergreen Virtual Academy, is a non-profit educator based in Coos Bay, Oregon. OFA Media reached out to Evergreen’s Elementary principal, but hasn’t received a response.

The mother, who wanted to remain anonymous, told OFA “this is the exact reason (why she chose online school) so I can see and monitor what is being taught. I live in Beaverton and pulled both of my daughter’s (from public school) last year.”

This story is an important reminder to parents that monitoring what’s being taught to your children is crucial more than ever before.
